Do you have coworkers who every time you talk to them make a point of telling you how busy they are? The best are those who do no manual labor but make manual labor sounds as they tell you how busy they are. It usually goes something like this, “Whew I’m so busy” as they make an exaggerated inhale and exhale. If they want to add the cherry on top, they wipe off their forehead too. I don’t know about you but I’ve never thought so hard I lost my breath. And to the best of my knowledge, my brain does not sweat.
So to everyone who walks around telling others how busy you are at work, this message is for you. Guess what? You’re at work. You’re supposed to be busy! Being busy is what we get paid for! If you’re not busy then you are not doing your job and you should not be getting paid.
Here’s a twist. Has anyone ever walked up to you and said, “Whew, I’m been so dang PRODUCTIVE.” Now that would be something to brag about. Why? Because there’s a huge difference between busy and productive. That’s a story for another day.
If you are tired of being busy and would like to be productive instead, here’s a pro tip: Start your day by planning your day in writing Just simply write out all the tasks you intend to complete that day and then check them off of the list as you complete them. Better yet, end your day with this exercise so you walk in each morning knowing your day is planned.
