The Tale of the Black-Eyed Pea

On Sunday, I was doing some shopping at the Kroger over on Studemont near my home in Houston. As I walked down the can good isle, something caught my eye,  It was this.

I stopped for a moment and had to process the sight. I then shot a picture. Why? Because whoever did this is a living embodiment of a person who will spend their life being unfulfilled and blame others.

Most would see this and think little. They’d think that someone was shopping for black-eye peas and was going to cook fresh peas but then changed their mind and then went the canned route. Again, it is not that simple, and here’s why.

First, today is January 8th. If the person who was buying peas intended their purchase to bring them good luck in 2023 they are seven days late.  That said, I am guessing this person is probably a procrastinator and seldom shows up on time.

Second, the saying goes, “As a person does one thing is how they do all things.”  Why didn’t the person take the peas back to the Produce Department when they changed their mind?  It’s because they are lazy and probably have little consideration for others.  They’re the type that feels like they are entitled. Like the world owes them something.

Third, there are no shortcuts to the top. I don’t know if you have hulled black-eyed peas before but it is a little work.  Just this past week I was having a conversation with a coworker, Jonathan, and we were talking about our parents made us shell black-eyed peas when we were young. It was work but fun too. After the peas were out of the can, my mom would can most of the for later and we would eat some too. Fresh black-eyed peas, with a little bacon fat, of course, are a fantastic meal. The person who did what is in the picture found an opportunity to cut a corner and they took it.  Do the hard work? Hell no! Well, I’ve had Trappy’s black-eyed peas and they are pretty good, but they are not as good as fresh. Great ain’t easy and easy ain’t great.

On Saturday afternoon, I watched the movie, The Accountant. In the movie, Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) is an accountant who specializes in working for dangerous criminals. Even though he has Aspergers, he is amazing at what he does. One of Christian Wolff’s “quirks” is that he can’t leave a task incomplete. I’m a person who has the same quirk. I guess that’s why sights like these catch my eye.

Okay, it’s week two of 2023. I’ve got another marathon this weekend and hopefully if things go to plan the Peggy Lou will be in saltwater by the time I start the race. Moving the boat requires the cooperation of five different businesses. I don’t know if I got lucky or if they figured out that I was not going to give up. I Don’t Stop.

I hope you Find Your Adventure and Live Your Life
